The culprit is something called a free radical — an unstable molecule missing an electron, which makes it aggressive. Why It’s at the Center of Almost Everything We Make
This isn’t just theory for us — it’s something we measured directly, and it’s the reason Icelandic winged kelp (Alaria esculenta) shows up in nearly every product we make.
In our own published research, Alaria esculenta extract achieved 76.9% collagenase-inhibitory activity and 72.8% elastase-inhibitory activity in vitro — meaning it actively blocks the two enzymes most responsible for breaking down collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm. The same extract also showed 93% tyrosinase inhibition, the enzyme behind uneven pigmentation, and the highest antioxidant capacity of the three Icelandic seaweeds we tested. That combination is what makes it genuinely useful: it neutralizes the free radicals driving oxidative stress and inhibits the enzymes that stress switches on, working the problem from two directions at once rather than treating one symptom.
