How TARAMAR sources seaweed — and why it refuses to do it any other way.
Most seaweed in the world’s skincare and food industries never sees a human hand. It’s cut, trawled, or dredged by machine, in volumes measured in tonnes, from boats that never slow down long enough to know what they’re pulling up. That’s not a criticism of scale for its own sake — it’s simply a different relationship with the resource than the one TARAMAR insists on having.
TARAMAR’s seaweed comes from Breiðafjörður, the vast, shallow bay between the Westfjords and the Snæfellsnes peninsula that holds nearly 3,000 islands, islets, and skerries and roughly half of Iceland’s entire intertidal area. It’s been a protected nature reserve since 1995 and sits on UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage list. Fishing families here have hand-harvested seaweed from these tidal flats for centuries — long before anyone called it a supply chain.
The Case Against the Machine
It’s worth being specific about why mechanical harvesting is a problem, rather than just asserting that it is. Two broad methods dominate commercial seaweed harvesting elsewhere in the world: mechanical cutting, which mows growth above the base and allows some regrowth, and mechanical trawling or dredging, which tears the whole plant, holdfast and all, off the seabed. The second method is the more damaging of the two: research on trawled kelp beds has repeatedly found that the associated understory community, the smaller algae, amphipods, and isopods living underneath the canopy, which are themselves an important food source for fish, takes years to recover, if it fully recovers before the next harvest cycle at all. Dredging in particular is understood to physically disturb the seabed itself, not just the plant sitting on top of it, in much the same way that bottom trawling for shellfish is now recognized as one of the more damaging things a fishing fleet can do to a seafloor community.
It’s also worth being straightforward here: mechanical seaweed harvesting does happen in Breiðafjörður today. Commercial operators in the bay use mechanical cutters and combs to bring in rockweed and kelp at scale, working under regulation and biomass monitoring intended to keep the practice sustainable. That’s a fact about the bay, not something TARAMAR is in a position to dispute or override. What TARAMAR controls is its own supply chain — and none of TARAMAR’s seaweed comes from those mechanized operations. Símon’s harvest is entirely separate: hand-picked, blade by blade, from the same waters.
Meet Símon
Most of TARAMAR’s seaweed and kelp comes from one person: Símon, a lifelong nature lover who has spent years learning the tidal rhythms of Breiðafjörður well enough to harvest from it responsibly. He doesn’t work from a boat pulling a net. He wades in, at low tide, and picks each blade individually by hand, one at a time, choosing what’s ready and leaving the rest to keep growing.
It’s slower. It’s also the only way to genuinely know what you’re harvesting, and to take only what the ecosystem can spare.
From Harvest to Drying Rack
Handpicking is only the first step. Once Símon brings the seaweed in from Breiðafjörður, it still has to be prepared before it’s ready for drying — and that preparation is just as deliberate as the harvest itself.
Each blade is submerged and stroked, by hand, in icy cold freshwater — a dedicated step, done after harvest and before drying, designed specifically to release barnacles and any other small organisms that may have attached themselves to the kelp while it was growing in the bay. It’s a meticulous, unhurried process, done blade by blade rather than in bulk, because a rinse that’s rushed is a rinse that misses things.
Only once a blade has been properly rinsed this way is it ready to move to drying. Here, too, the process is deliberate rather than convenient: the seaweed is dried at a carefully controlled combination of temperature and airflow, calibrated to remove moisture evenly without heat-damaging the compounds the whole harvest was undertaken to preserve in the first place. Get the temperature too high, or the airflow wrong, and you can lose exactly the bioactivity that made it worth picking by hand to begin with.
Only after that — handpicked, rinsed, and dried under controlled conditions — is the seaweed ready for extraction and formulation.
Why This Belongs in the Ingredient Story, Not Just the Supply Chain
It would be easy to treat harvesting method as a logistics detail, invisible to anyone who isn’t sourcing the raw material directly. TARAMAR treats it as part of the ingredient’s actual identity, for the same reason the Institute treats Icelandic origin, Arctic daylight, and pesticide-free growing conditions as real technical factors rather than backstory: how an ingredient is taken from its environment shapes what’s still intact in it by the time it reaches a formula, and it shapes whether that environment is still there to provide it again next season.
A handpicked blade, rinsed by hand and dried under carefully controlled conditions, is simply a different raw material than the same species pulled up by the tonne from behind a dredge. Not because of sentiment — because of what survives the process, and what’s left behind in the water for the ecosystem, and for Símon, to return to.
